In the past the Korean scientific community was hesitant about working with creationists due to the fear of giving the movement more credibility. However, silence is no anymore an option.
The STR has been fighting to get information about evolution from textbooks including the discovery that the feathered Archaeopteryx was an ancestral bird. However, this is just one aspect of the evolution of the development paradigm.
What is Evolution?
Evolution is a theory of science that explains the evolution of the genetic traits of living organisms over time. The theory is based on fact that living things adapt to their environment, which can cause variations in genes, or even entire genomes. Over time these changes could result in the creation of new species. Natural selection is the most popular theory of evolution. It explains how individuals who have advantages are more likely to reproduce and survive than those with less advantageous traits. This variation in reproduction could, over time, lead to the development and emergence of new species.
The word "evolution" is derived from the Latin word meaning unrolling or revealing, but the concept has had a variety of meanings as it has taken form in the fields of science and in other fields. Early evolutionists such as Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predetermined to change into another species. The term transmutation was coined by Lamarck's student, embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, to describe this view. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, criticized the concept of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy’s student.
More recently, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process that occurs when living organisms develop traits that increase their chances of survival, or their ability to produce offspring. Over time, genetic variability can cause a population to acquire new physical traits or biological functions. Natural selection is the mechanism that triggers the majority of evolutionary changes. Non-genetic changes, such as an increase in muscle mass from exercise or diet, cannot be considered evolution because they don't pass on to future generations.
Despite the fact that evolution has withstood the tests of time and thousands of scientific tests Creationists have taken advantage of the idea that the theory is controversial to argue that it should not be taught in school. In South Korea, creationists won a few victories over evolution in textbooks for high schools. This includes the removal of all references about the evolutionary history of humans as well as Archaeopteryx - a feathered dinosaur that is believed to be the bird's ancestor.
Why is Evolution Important?

It is important for science educators to stand up for the teaching of evolution. In some nations around the world, anti-evolution sentiment is growing. In the United States, efforts to limit the teaching of evolution have made some progress in some states. In South Korea, a group known as the Society for Textbook Revise, an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KAC) is a campaign for textbooks to include content on the evolution of horses and their Avian ancestor Archaeopteryx.
While these are troubling developments, it is also important to remember that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming. The evidence comes from a broad range of sources, such as fossils, genetic studies, and the behavior of living organisms. Other scientists independently confirm the evidence.
The vast majority of scientists agree with the theory of evolution. The reasons behind this belief are diverse. Certain scientists study evolution in order to discover practical solutions that can lead to the development of new treatments or developing new medicines, while others are driven by a desire to improve animal and plant species, generally for the benefit of humans. Some are simply curious, whereas others have a profound faith in God and want to understand how the universe works.
What is Creationism?
Creationists believe that God created everything in the universe. They also believe that the Bible is God's word and should be believed to be true. Many creationists are Christians, but not all. Creationists are typically divided into two groups: Young Earth Creationists (YEC) or old earth creationists.
YECs are the most well known type of creationist, and they believe that God created the world exactly as described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of six days of creation was true and that the universe and the life on Earth were created just recently.
OECs may be less popular, but their beliefs are just as intense as those of YECs. OECs believe that the universe as well as Earth are billions-of-years old and believe that evolution is a lie.
Both kinds of creationism deny the idea that scientific principles like natural selection and biogenesis can explain how life began on Earth. They claim that evolution is impossible, because it would require miracles. The pioneers of modern scientific thought resisted miracles because they feared they could lose their credibility.
Some creationists believe in naturalistic evolution as well as special creation, and consider their views to be "theistic evolution." This is sometimes called "continuous creationism" or "evolution from the original species." This theory states that God creates species from scratch and then allows these to evolve over time. These evolution changes will eventually result in new species similar to the original.
Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the entire universe in one event called the Great Flood. They believe that the first species were created at the same time, and that they grew slowly afterwards. They also reject the idea of abiogenesis and argue that the emergence of self-replicating organisms from nonliving matter is impossible.
In general, the creationists oppose the teaching of evolution in schools. Numerous professional associations, like the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education are in support of this view as do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. However, certain scientists and educational institutions are more flexible, and permit the inclusion of creationism and evolution in their curriculum.
What exactly is Creationism in Korea?
When people think about the concept of creationism, a lot think of the United States. However, South Korea is also the home of an anti-evolutionist movement. The publishers of textbooks for high school students have recently announced that they will remove references to evolution from their editions. A group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR), an independent body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research which is the driving force behind the campaign. The STR has achieved its first victory by removing from textbooks evidence of the evolution and ancestor of an bird, the Archeopteryx. It is now focusing on removing excerpts from Darwin's infamous finch research and on human evolution as well.
STR claims to have the support of 4,000 families and individuals. Its mission, it states is to cleanse the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" which portrays a negative view for students. It also seeks to counter the influence of American creationists in the United States. A survey of undergraduates studying biology revealed that a majority of them didn't believe in evolution. The reasons for this aren't entirely evident, but they could be due to religion or the absence of creation scientists in the US.
The KACR has achieved many things through its seminars and lectures. It publishes a bimonthly magazine, Creation, and has published books. The most notable of these is a text on the natural sciences with a creationist viewpoint, which has sparked interest among college students. In 1991 the year 1991, a minister and professor started teaching Creation Science in one university and it is taught until today.
On August 6th and 7th of 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. It was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from abroad, including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin addressed a crowd of more than a thousand. KACR members and KACR have also given talks on creation science in prestigious seminaries. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center in the future.
